Community Outreach

Community Outreach

Oakland Strokes is dedicated to making the sport of rowing accessible to the youth of Oakland. We strive to provide quality rowing instruction and programming that will make a positive impact on the youth and families we engage from Oakland and the Bay Area. We want those youth to experience the thrill of rowing; pushing themselves to be better athletes and competing against the best competition in the country.

Our Outreach program has expanded Oakland youth's exposure to rowing through innovative programs such as Ergs2School (E2S). With E2S, Oakland Strokes transports rowing machines along with skilled instructors to various locations. These coaches offer tutorials and cover the basics of rowing while students get hands on experience with the same equipment they would use as members of the competitive team. To broaden our reach, we partner with high schools, after-school programs, community centers, and other community-based organizations.  The Ergs2School program has been underwritten by private donations and a grant from the Olympic Club Foundation.

Our Middle School Learn to Row camps are another way we increase Oakland youth’s exposure to rowing. Taking place in the fall, spring and summer months, Learn to Row camps are 5 weeks long and a great way to introduce the on-the-water experience. Learn to Row camps are also a fun way to meet other newcomers to the sport. Where necessary, financial assistance may be available for families in need. Our Outreach staff can provide more information. Please see our Middle School information page for more details about the Learn to Row camps.

Our Outreach staff has worked with a number of organizations to develop a customized curriculum that meets their needs. If you are interested, have questions or just want a little more information about our Outreach programs, please contact our Outreach Coordinator.

We are always looking for new partners and ways to encompass more opportunities to reach youth in need. If you are interested in partnering with Oakland Strokes or have youth interested in rowing please contact our Outreach Coordinator.
